Hip Hop mogul "Kanye West," and husband of social media icon "Kim Kardashian," lit up the media this weekend after delivering a speech on Saturday Night Live while wearing a red “Make America Great Again” hat. West proves once again that his hit song “Can’t Tell Me Nothing,” was not just another record for the charts , but is his way of life. West has made it clear many times in interviews that he is a “free-thinker”, and refuses to be “controlled” by anyone. West’s opinionated nature and abrupt actions, often make him the center of controversy. In 2005, West garnered backlash and support after he candidly stated during “A Concert For Hurricane Relief,” for Hurricane Katrina, that “[President George] Bush, doesn't care about black people,” and accused Bush of being a “racist” in reaction to George W. Bush’s response to Hurricane Katrina . West later apologized for his judgment of former President Bush, however even after the incident, West continuously brought awareness to social injustices among people of color in his music and interviews. Now thirteen years later, Kanye West delivers a pro-Trump speech during Saturday Night Live’s after show, heavily supporting President Donald Trump, who is known to create policies that greatly affect all minorities. “It’s so many times that I talk to a white person about this, and they say, ‘How could you support Trump?,” said West. “ He’s racist.’ Well if I was concerned about racism, I would have moved out of America a long time ago. We don’t just make our decisions off of racism” West also took a dig at the Democratic party. “Democrats were responsible for a plan to take fathers out the home and promote welfare.” said West. “Does anybody know about that? That’s a Democratic plan.” Although there is nothing wrong with being a Republican, improvising an in depth speech that supports a president with conservative views, to a SNL audience with liberal views, is a bit erratic. SNL comedian Kenan Thompson disagreed with West’s choice to lecture the audience, and did not even stay to listen to it. “He voiced his opinion, very loudly, for a long time,” said Thompson. “We’re all entitled to our opinion, but you know, I don’t know if that’s the moment, necessarily, to hold people hostage like that” Thompson also thought it was unfair that the other cast members had to be subjected to listening to West’s rant. “ I felt so bad for those guys [SNL cast members], said Thompson. “It’s hard to stand there and not be able to debate somebody who’s going so far against, you know, your personal opinion and just stand there and take it.” Despite SNL accommodating West, and allowing him to freely vent his political views without interruption, and only slight booing from the audience, West still felt as if he was “bullied” for supporting the “Make America Great Again” movement. “You see they laughing at me.” said West. “You heard [them], they scream at me, they bully me. They bullied me backstage they said, ‘Don’t go out there with that hat on.’ They bullied me backstage.” Unfortunately his rant continued the following Sunday via twitter, causing alarm after part of his tweet said that the “13th amendment [which abolished slavery] should be abolished.” In Sunday’s tweet he also included his interpretation of the phrase “Make America Great Again.” West further stated in his tweet that “ this [MAGA] represents good and America becoming whole again. We will no longer outsource to other countries. We build factories here in America and create jobs. We will provide jobs for all who are free from prisons.” Of course the following Monday West revised his statement, claiming that he meant the 13th amendment should be amended instead of abolished. West retraction coincided around the same time he received backlash from other celebrities like Lana Del Rey, Chris Evans, and Meek Mill. Some sources say that even West’s wife, Kim Kardashian West, was embarrassed by his antics this weekend. According to People.Com , “Having all this backlash against Kanye is embarrassing for her and her family, but she will never say that,” the source says. “She supports Kanye through and through and truly does think her husband is entitled to his own opinion.” Some people even speculate that West’s sudden right wing advocacy is just a publicity stunt to rally attention around his new album Ye, which was released on Sept. 29 at midnight, the same night of his performance on Saturday Night Live. Even in the midst of backlashes and controversies, at least the West’s still have love. In a subtle response to the eventful three days, Kim Kardashian West posted a loving picture of her gazing at Kanye while he charmingly looked down, with the caption “We got love,” surrounded by heart emojis. The famous power couple are continuing to move forward, Kanye West standing by his words, and Kim Kardashian West, fully supporting his decision to voice his unwavering opinions.
